F eb 2 00 7 GRAPHS WITH SPECIFIED DEGREE DISTRIBUTIONS , SIMPLE EPIDEMICS AND LOCAL VACCINATION STRATEGIES

چکیده
Consider a random graph, having a pre-specified degree distribution F but other than that being uniformly distributed, describing the social structure (friendship) in a large community. Suppose one individual in the community is externally infected by an infectious disease and that the disease has its course by assuming that infected individuals infect their not yet infected friends independently with probability p. For this situation the paper determines R0 and τ0, the basic reproduction number and the asymptotic final size in case of a major outbreak. Further, the paper looks at some different local vaccination strategies where individuals are chosen randomly and vaccinated, or friends of the selected individuals are vaccinated, prior to the introduction of the disease. For the studied vaccination strategies the paper determines Rv: the reproduction number, and τv: the asymptotic final proportion infected in case of a major outbreak, after vaccinating a fraction v.

متن کاملEfficient local strategies for vaccination and network attack
We study how a fraction of a population should be vaccinated to most efficiently stop epidemics. We argue that only local information (about the neighborhood of specific vertices) is usable in practice, and hence we consider only local vaccination strategies. The efficiency of the vaccination strategies is investigated with both static and dynamical measures. Among other things we find that the...
متن کاملEpidemics in populations with two levels of mixing
We consider epidemics with removal ('SIR epidemics') in populations which mix at two levels, 'global' and 'local'. We analyse the conditions under which a large outbreak is possible, the size of such outbreaks when they can occur, and the implications for vaccination strategies; in each case comparing our results with the simpler homogeneous mixing case. More precisely, we consider models in wh...
متن کاملComparative Analysis of the Effectiveness of Three Immunization Strategies in Controlling Disease Outbreaks in Realistic Social Networks
The high incidence of emerging infectious diseases has highlighted the importance of effective immunization strategies, especially the stochastic algorithms based on local available network information. Present stochastic strategies are mainly evaluated based on classical network models, such as scale-free networks and small-world networks, and thus are insufficient. Three frequently referred s...
متن کاملImpact of Preventive Responses to Epidemics in Rural Regions
Various epidemics have arisen in rural locations through human-animal interaction, such as the H1N1 outbreak of 2009. Through collaboration with local government officials, we have surveyed a rural county and its communities and collected a dataset characterizing the rural population. From the respondents' answers, we build a social (face-to-face) contact network. With this network, we explore ...
